What's creative work worth?

About this Webinar

Generative AI can produce a convincing image, video, or design in seconds. As it does, it's changing what creative work is worth, who gets to make it, and whether we can believe what we're looking at.

Watch this hour-long conversation, hosted by Portable's Creative Director Joe Sciglitano, with four people working at different edges of this shift:

  • Bhautik Joshi, R&D Lead at Canva, on what these tools really are once you get past the hype, and on the design and technical decisions that shape what they can do.
  • Christen Cornell, Research Fellow at Creative Australia, on what it means for the creative industries and the people who make their living in them.
  • Dr Anna Broinowski, Walkley-winning filmmaker and synthetic media researcher, on making work inside the new reality, and what it does to truth on screen.
  • Tyrone Estephan, Executive Director of Alt.vfx, one of Australia's leading visual effects studios, on the commercial pressures reshaping production right now.

What do they speak about?

The conversation moves between two uses of AI: synthesis, where a finished image is generated from a prompt, and remediation, where AI is used to transform or refine work that already exists. From there: whether generative AI is genuinely different from the camera, Photoshop and CGI that came before it, or just the next tool in that line; why audiences feel betrayed by undisclosed AI use, even when they cannot always tell it apart from the real thing; how alt.vfx decides when using AI on a paid brief is the right call, and when it is not; and what Creative Australia's National Arts Participation Survey shows about how the public actually wants AI disclosed.
