Plato was a project manager. Confucius was a scrum master. Kant “set realistic expectations”.When things go wrong at work, it can feel like the wind is blowing from all directions. But it’s not like you’re the first person to face a stiff breeze. People have been trying to figure out how to do life since forever.
As a Senior Producer at Portable, Libby de Souza is the bridge between creatives, technologists and clients. In this Portable Talk, Libby will share how old philosophies can provide guidance and tools for tackling every mini-existential crisis that occurs in the modern workplace.
This talk is for producers, studio managers, project managers, account managers, unofficial project leads (especially unofficial project leads) and anyone who wants to get shit done or find some perspective on the stresses of work.
This isn’t a philosophy lesson. You’ll come away with practical tools drawn from the world’s deepest thinkers that can be applied immediately and bring some calm to the chaos.
Drinks and nibbles will be served from 5:30 pm, and the presentation will kick off at 6:15 pm. RSVP to let us know you're coming!
When: Thu 28th February 2019 5:30pm onwards AWST

Empathy. It helps us understand the people we're designing for and motivates us to solve their trickiest problems. But do we trust ourselves to really use it?
Human-centred Designer Joe Sciglitano takes us on a journey to discover the what, how and why of empathy, and how it's transformed his design practice. Hear experiences from the darker side of Human Centered Design and how to stay safe whilst daring to bring your full humanity to work.
With plenty of storytelling, animated GIFs and journeys into the unconscious, you'll laugh, you'll cry, but that's kinda the point, ya feel me?
RSVP to secure your spot! Drinks and nibbles will be provided (as always!)
When: Thu 21st March 2019 6:15pm onwards AWST

The user experience of growing old, getting sick and dying is never going to be great. But a whole series of the experiences along the way are far more unpleasant and frustrating than they need to be, especially for those close to and caring for a person who is elderly or dying.
In this talk for organisations, public servants and individuals, Portable discusses its year-long research and development initiative into the future of death and ageing, describe how a human-centred perspective can be used to improve citizen experiences and illuminate a path to a more positive future.
Join us to hear the insights from our report The Future of Death and Ageing. Coffee and a light breakfast will be provided.
